Allergies assessment at Bridge House Clinic
What is allergies?

An allergy is when your immune system overreacts to a substance that is normally harmless, such as pollen, dust mites or certain foods.

When you come into contact with something you are allergic to (an allergen), your body treats it as a threat and releases chemicals to defend itself. This reaction is what causes allergy symptoms, which can range from mildly irritating to, in rare cases, severe. Common types include hayfever (allergic rhinitis), allergic skin reactions such as hives, food allergies, and reactions to insect stings or some medicines. Allergies are usually managed rather than cured, and identifying what triggers yours is an important first step.

01Symptoms

Symptoms of allergies.

Allergy symptoms depend on the trigger and how your body reacts. They may appear soon after contact or build up over time.

01Sneezing and a runny or blocked noseOften seen with hayfever and dust or animal allergies, sometimes alongside an itchy or congested feeling in the nose.
02Itchy, watery or red eyesEyes can feel gritty, itchy and watery, particularly during pollen seasons or around pets.
03Skin reactionsRaised, itchy patches such as hives, redness or a rash can appear where the skin reacts to a trigger.
04Wheezing or a tight chestSome people notice coughing, wheezing or breathlessness when exposed to a trigger. Tell us if this happens to you.
05Stomach upset after certain foodsFood allergies may cause symptoms such as tummy pain, nausea or an itchy mouth shortly after eating.
06Swelling around the affected areaMild swelling, for example around the lips or eyes, can occur. Sudden severe swelling of the lips or throat needs emergency care (see below).

02Causes & risk factors

Why it happens.

Allergies happen when the immune system reacts to substances that are harmless for most people. Common triggers include:

Pollen from grasses, trees and weeds (a common cause of hayfever)
Dust mites found in bedding, carpets and soft furnishings
Animal dander from pets such as cats and dogs
Mould spores in damp areas indoors or outdoors
Certain foods, such as nuts, shellfish, eggs or cow's milk
Insect stings or certain medicines in some people
03When to get it checked

Don't wait for it to settle.

Early assessment helps you get the right treatment sooner. See a specialist if:

III.You want to identify your triggersIf you suspect a food, pet or environmental trigger but cannot pin it down, testing can help point you in the right direction.
