B12 & vitamin deficiency assessment at Bridge House Clinic
What is b12 & vitamin deficiency?

A vitamin deficiency means your body is short of something it needs to work well — most often vitamin B12, but also folate or vitamin D.

Being low can leave you tired and sometimes cause anaemia or nerve problems. It's common and very treatable, but it's easy to put the symptoms down to a busy life. The good news: a simple blood test usually shows what's low, and once we know the cause, treatment can make a real difference to how you feel.

01Symptoms

Symptoms of b12 & vitamin deficiency.

Symptoms often build up slowly over months, so they're easy to miss — and they overlap with a lot of other things.

01Tiredness & breathlessnessPersistent low energy and feeling out of breath or pale, which can point to anaemia from low B12 or folate.
02Pins, needles & numbnessTingling, numbness or a strange sensation in the hands or feet — a sign that low B12 may be affecting the nerves.
03Sore tongue & mouthA red, smooth or sore tongue and mouth ulcers that keep coming back.
04Brain fog & low moodTrouble concentrating or remembering things, and feeling flat or low for no clear reason.

02Causes & risk factors

Why it happens.

There's usually a reason your levels are low — finding it matters as much as topping the vitamins back up.

A diet low in B12 (vegan or vegetarian)
Pernicious anaemia (an absorption problem)
Coeliac disease or other gut conditions
Surgery affecting the stomach or bowel
Certain long-term medicines
Getting older, as absorption falls
03When to get it checked

Don't wait for it to settle.

Early assessment helps you get the right treatment sooner. See a specialist if:

I.Tiredness that won't liftIf low energy has been dragging on for weeks despite rest, it's worth checking rather than just pushing through.
II.Nerve symptomsPins and needles, numbness or unsteadiness shouldn't be ignored, as low B12 can affect the nerves over time.
III.A restricted dietIf you're vegan or vegetarian, or eat very little, your B12 may need keeping an eye on.
IV.A known gut conditionCoeliac disease, other gut problems or previous gut surgery can stop you absorbing vitamins properly.

Diagnosing b12 & vitamin deficiency at Bridge House Clinic
04How it's diagnosed

Confirmed with a simple blood test — and a look at why.

Dr Hina Parvez takes a full history and examines you, then arranges a blood test to measure your B12 and related levels such as folate, and to check for anaemia. Just as important is finding the underlying cause, so where it's needed she'll arrange further tests or refer you on — for example to look into an absorption or gut problem.
