When a hand or wrist joint becomes painful and inflamed — most often from base-of-thumb or wrist arthritis, but also from tendon problems and other sources of inflammation — a well-placed injection can calm the pain and swelling so you can use the hand again, frequently delaying or avoiding the need for surgery. Care here is matched to the problem: for many joints a standard steroid injection in an outpatient appointment is all that is needed; where the joint is small or deep and pinpoint placement matters, an ultrasound-guided injection lets the medicine be delivered exactly where it counts.

01How it's done
Steroid injectionThe first-line option for most painful joints and tendon problems — a quick outpatient injection of steroid into or around the affected area to settle pain and inflammation, often enough to delay or avoid surgery.
Pricefrom £225
Metacarpal injectionAn injection placed at the metacarpal region of the hand, used when the pain and inflammation are coming from that part of the hand rather than a joint better reached another way.
Price£475
Ultrasound-guided injectionAn image-guided injection for small or deep joints where precise placement matters — ultrasound lets Mr Kodumuri see the joint and deliver the medicine exactly where it is needed.
Pricefrom £750

02How to prepare
1
Note where it hurts

Jot down which joint or area is painful, what makes it worse and how it limits your hand — this helps Mr Kodumuri pinpoint the target and choose the right injection.

2
List your medications

Tell us if you take blood-thinners or have diabetes, as both can affect the timing of a steroid injection and how your blood sugar responds afterwards.

3
Bring any scans

If you have had recent X-rays or scans of the hand or wrist, bring them or the report — they can confirm the diagnosis and guide where the injection should go.

04What happens on the day
1
Examination and diagnosis

Mr Kodumuri examines the hand and wrist, checks the painful joint or tendon and confirms what is driving the pain and inflammation before recommending an injection.

2
We agree the right injection

We talk through whether a standard steroid injection is enough, whether the spot calls for ultrasound guidance, or whether a metacarpal injection is the right target — and what each involves.

3
The injection

The injection is given in the outpatient appointment, with ultrasound used at the same visit where precise placement is needed. It takes only a few minutes and you go home straight afterwards.

4
Aftercare and follow-up

You will leave with clear advice on resting and using the hand over the next day or two and on what to expect as the medicine takes effect, with a follow-up arranged if it is needed.

01244 982032
Do I need a GP referral? +

No — you can book an assessment and injection directly with us, with or without a letter from your doctor.

How much does an injection cost? +

A standard steroid injection is from £225 and a metacarpal injection is £475. An ultrasound-guided injection, used for small or deep joints, is from £750. The initial consultation is £200.

Will an injection mean I can avoid surgery? +

An injection often reduces pain and inflammation enough to delay or avoid surgery, though we cannot promise a particular result. Mr Kodumuri will be honest about what an injection can realistically do for your joint and what the next steps are if it does not settle.

What is the injection like? +

It is given in an ordinary outpatient appointment and takes only a few minutes. Where the joint is small or deep, ultrasound is used at the same visit to place the medicine precisely. You go home straight afterwards.

What happens after the injection? +

You will have advice on resting and using the hand for the next day or two. The medicine usually eases pain and inflammation over the following days, and any follow-up is arranged at the time.
