Myringotomy near Chester & Wrexham
A myringotomy makes a tiny opening in the eardrum to drain trapped fluid and relieve pressure behind it, carried out by an ENT surgeon at Bridge House Clinic in Rossett.

When fluid sits behind the eardrum it can dull hearing, cause a blocked or full feeling in the ear, and in children affect speech and learning. A myringotomy is a short surgical procedure in which the surgeon makes a precise incision in the eardrum to let that fluid escape and equalise the pressure.
At Bridge House Clinic the procedure is performed by our ENT surgeon, who will examine the ear, confirm whether myringotomy is the right step, and talk through what to expect before anything is booked. It can be done on its own or alongside the placement of grommets, depending on how persistent the problem has been.
Jot down when the muffled hearing, fullness or earache began and whether it followed a cold or ear infection. For a child, mention any turning-up of the television or asking for things to be repeated.
If you or your child has had a hearing test, tympanometry or a previous ENT opinion, bring the reports so the surgeon can see how the ear has behaved over time.
Tell us in advance about any anticoagulant medication, ear drops you already use, or reactions to anaesthetic, so the procedure can be planned safely.
Why have a myringotomy at Bridge House

The surgeon looks into the ear canal and eardrum, confirms that fluid is the cause and that a myringotomy is appropriate, then explains the procedure and answers your questions before you agree to go ahead.
A small, controlled cut is made in the eardrum under the microscope and the fluid behind it is gently suctioned out. If grommets have been planned, a tiny tube can be set into the opening at this point.
The surgeon confirms the ear is clear, gives you guidance on keeping water out and on what is normal as the eardrum heals, and arranges any follow-up or hearing recheck that is needed.
Often linked to glue ear
A myringotomy is a common treatment for glue ear, where sticky fluid collects behind the eardrum and dulls hearing, particularly in children. If you are not yet sure what is behind the blocked or muffled feeling, it helps to understand the underlying condition first.

Book now→How much does a myringotomy cost at Bridge House Clinic? +
The myringotomy fee is £450. This is confirmed before your procedure date. An initial ENT consultation is charged separately at £200, and if the surgeon recommends grommets that would be quoted as its own option.
Can I arrange this without a referral from my GP? +
Yes. You can book directly with our ENT clinic and be assessed without a letter from your GP. If you would like your own doctor kept informed afterwards, the surgeon can write to them.
Is a myringotomy done on adults as well as children? +
It is. Trapped fluid and pressure behind the eardrum affect adults too, and our ENT surgeon performs the procedure for both age groups.
Will I need grommets as well? +
Not always. A myringotomy alone may be enough if the fluid is expected to settle. When the problem keeps returning, the surgeon may suggest grommets to keep the ear ventilated, and will discuss this with you beforehand.
What happens to the small opening in the eardrum? +
An eardrum incision made on its own usually heals over within a short time on its own. The surgeon will explain what to expect for your ear and when any follow-up check is worthwhile.
