Spirometry is a straightforward breathing test that records how much air you can blow out and how fast you can do it. By comparing those measurements against what's expected for your age, height and sex, it gives an objective picture of how well your lungs are working — useful when investigating breathlessness, a persistent cough, or a known or suspected condition such as asthma or COPD.

At Bridge House Clinic in Rossett the test is run by our nursing team, who walk you through each breath and explain what the readings mean before you leave. You can book directly, with no GP referral and no waiting list.

02How to prepare
1
Avoid heavy meals and smoking beforehand

Don't eat a large meal or smoke in the hour or so before your test, as both can affect how freely you breathe out.

2
Wear something loose

Choose clothing that doesn't restrict your chest or tummy, so you can take a full, deep breath comfortably.

3
Bring a list of your inhalers and medicines

Note down any inhalers or breathing medicines you use and when you last took them — ask us in advance whether any should be paused before the test.

04What happens on the day
1
A few quick measurements

We record your height, weight and a little history about your breathing and any inhalers, which lets us interpret your results accurately.

2
Practice the breathing

The nurse shows you exactly how to blow into the mouthpiece — a full deep breath in, then out as hard and as long as you can. A soft clip keeps your nose closed.

3
The recorded blows

You repeat the breath a few times so we capture your best, most consistent readings. It takes effort but isn't uncomfortable, and you rest between attempts.

4
Your results, explained

The nurse goes through what your figures show about your lung function and what, if anything, may be worth following up — all in the same visit.
