Chest Pain

Chest pain has many causes, and most are not related to the heart — but it should always be taken seriously. Here's what can cause it, when to get help straight away, and how a consultant cardiologist can assess it.

Chest Pain assessment at Bridge House Clinic
What is chest pain?

Chest pain is any pain, tightness, pressure or discomfort felt in the chest. It can come from the heart, but just as often from the muscles and ribs, the gullet and stomach, the lungs — or from anxiety.

Because some causes are serious, chest pain is never something to ignore. If the pain is severe or crushing, spreads to your arm, jaw, neck or back, or comes with sweating, feeling sick or breathlessness, call 999 straight away — do not wait for a private appointment. For chest pain that comes and goes, or that has already been checked as non-urgent, a consultant assessment helps find the cause and gives you a clear plan.

01Symptoms

04How it's diagnosed

Finding the cause of your chest pain.

Dr Khalid Khan starts with a full consultation — your symptoms, history and cardiovascular risk — and an examination. Depending on what he finds, an ECG (heart trace), an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) or ambulatory monitoring may be arranged as part of your care. The fee for any test is confirmed at your consultation before you go ahead.
