What does a rheumatologist do? +
A rheumatologist is a doctor who diagnoses and treats conditions that cause inflammation in the joints, muscles and other tissues — inflammatory arthritis, gout, lupus, vasculitis and other autoimmune and connective-tissue diseases. Treatment is mostly with medicines, injections and long-term monitoring rather than surgery.
How much does it cost to see a rheumatologist privately? +
A consultation with Dr Raghuvanshi is £220. A joint injection costs £350 for a small area and from £450 for a large area. If blood tests are needed, our muscle and rheumatology panel is £165, with the sample taken at the clinic.
What happens at a first rheumatology appointment? +
Dr Raghuvanshi asks when your symptoms began, which joints are affected, how long stiffness lasts in the morning and whether anyone in your family has a similar condition. She then examines your joints and may suggest blood tests or a scan. Bring a list of your medicines and any previous results or letters.
What is the difference between a rheumatologist and an orthopaedic surgeon? +
Both look after bones and joints. An orthopaedic surgeon treats structural problems, such as fractures or a worn joint that needs replacing, often with an operation. A rheumatologist treats conditions driven by inflammation or the immune system, using medicines and injections, and considers the whole body as well as the joints.
What symptoms should I see a rheumatologist about? +
Joints that are swollen, warm or stiff for more than half an hour in the morning, pain in several joints at once, attacks of severe pain in a single joint such as the big toe, or joint problems together with rashes, mouth ulcers, dry eyes or unexplained fevers. A hot, red, very painful joint with a high temperature needs urgent medical help — contact NHS 111 or your GP straight away.
Do I need a GP referral? +
No — you can book a rheumatology consultation yourself. If you have a GP letter or recent blood results, bring them with you, as they help Dr Raghuvanshi see how your symptoms have developed.
