What happens at a menopause consultation? +

Dr Whelan asks about your symptoms, your periods, your medical and family history and what matters most to you. She talks through lifestyle measures and the treatment options, including HRT, which is prescribed where appropriate. You leave with a letter that sets out the plan.

Can I book without a GP referral? +

Yes. You can book a private menopause consultation directly — there's no need to be referred or to register with us.

Do I need a blood test to diagnose the menopause? +

Usually not if you are over 45 and have typical symptoms — NICE guidance says perimenopause and menopause can be diagnosed from symptoms alone. Hormone tests can help in some situations, for example if you are under 45. Our hormonal health panel (£125) measures FSH, LH, oestradiol and related hormones, and Dr Whelan can tell you whether testing is worthwhile.

When does the menopause start and how long does it last? +

In the UK the average age of menopause is 51, and perimenopause symptoms often begin a few years before, in the mid-40s. You have reached menopause when you haven't had a period for 12 months. Symptoms continue for around four years after the last period on average, though some people have them for much longer.

What is perimenopause? +

Perimenopause is the run-up to the menopause, when hormone levels begin to fall and periods become irregular. Hot flushes, night sweats, poor sleep, mood changes and brain fog often start at this stage, while you are still having periods.

How long does HRT take to work? +

Many people notice hot flushes easing within a few weeks, but it can take around three months to feel the full effect, which is why treatment is usually reviewed after about three months.
