An electrocardiogram (ECG, or heart trace) is a simple, non-invasive recording of your heart's electrical activity. Small adhesive sensors placed on the chest, arms and legs pick up the tiny signals that fire with each heartbeat, and the machine prints these as a trace.

The test helps to check your heart rhythm and rate, which can help identify an underlying heart problem. At Bridge House Clinic in Rossett, our resting ECG is carried out by an experienced nurse in a calm treatment room, with the trace available for clinical review on the day.

02How to prepare
1
Skip heavy caffeine beforehand

Strong coffee, energy drinks or a cigarette just before the appointment can nudge your heart rate up. Where you can, leave a gap so the trace reflects your usual resting rhythm.

2
Choose a top that opens easily

The sensors sit on bare skin across the chest, so a shirt or loose top that comes off readily makes the recording quicker and more comfortable than a tight one-piece.

3
Bring a note of your heart medicines

If you take anything for blood pressure, rhythm or the heart, jotting down the names and doses helps us read the trace in context.

4
Mention a fitted pacemaker or device

Tell the nurse on arrival if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator or similar implant - it changes how the trace is interpreted.

04What happens on the day
1
Settle and rest

You lie comfortably on the couch for a few minutes so your heart rate eases to its resting level before recording begins.

2
Sensors are positioned

Ten small adhesive electrodes are placed on the chest, wrists and ankles. The skin may be lightly wiped first so the sensors make good contact.

3
The trace is recorded

You stay still and breathe normally for a few seconds while the machine captures the twelve-lead recording. It is silent and you feel nothing.

4
Sensors removed, trace reviewed

The electrodes peel off straight away and you can dress. The recording is passed for clinical review so the findings can be acted on.

How much does an ECG cost? +

A resting ECG (heart trace) at Bridge House Clinic is £100. That covers the nurse appointment and the twelve-lead recording, with the trace made available for clinical review on the day.

Do I need to be referred for an ECG? +

No. You can book a resting ECG with us directly - there is no need for a hospital referral first. If the trace suggests anything that needs specialist input, we can guide you on the next steps.

Does an ECG hurt? +

Not at all. The sensors are simply stickers placed on the skin; nothing is injected and no current passes into you. You may feel the adhesive peel when they come off, and that is the only sensation.

How long does the appointment take? +

The appointment is usually around 30 minutes. Much of that is settling and positioning the sensors - the recording itself takes only seconds.

What does an ECG actually show? +

It records your heart's electrical activity to check the rhythm and rate and to look for signs of strain or earlier changes. It is one useful snapshot; depending on what you came in for, further tests are sometimes suggested.

Can I drive and work straight after? +

Yes. An ECG is purely a recording with no recovery time, so you can return to driving, work and normal activities the moment you leave.
