If your underarms sweat far more than they should — soaking through shirts, needing several changes a day, no matter the weather — that's axillary hyperhidrosis, and it can wear you down. When strong antiperspirants haven't helped enough, botulinum toxin is a well-established medical treatment.

A series of small injections just under the skin of the underarm temporarily blocks the nerve signals that switch on the sweat glands, so the area sweats far less. This is the medical use of Toxin for sweating, not the cosmetic facial treatment. At Bridge House Clinic in Rossett, it's given by Dr Dalia Alsaadi, Consultant Dermatologist, as a quick outpatient appointment of around twenty to thirty minutes. The effect builds over a week or two and typically lasts several months — often around four to six — and can then be repeated. It treats the sweating rather than the underlying tendency, so it isn't permanent and repeat sessions are usually needed. You can book directly, with no GP referral and no NHS waiting list.

02How to prepare
1
Skip antiperspirant on the day

Don't apply antiperspirant or deodorant to your underarms on the day of your appointment, so the area is clean and ready to treat.

2
Don't shave right beforehand

Avoid shaving your underarms immediately before your visit — a day or two earlier is fine, but freshly shaved skin is best left to settle.

3
Tell us your medicines and allergies

Let us know what medicines you take and about any allergy to botulinum toxin, so Dr Alsaadi can confirm the treatment is safe for you.

04What happens on the day
1
Assessment

Dr Alsaadi confirms that your symptoms are hyperhidrosis and that Toxin is a suitable option for you, going through your history, medicines and any allergy to botulinum toxin.

2
Mapping the area

The underarm area to be treated is mapped out, sometimes using a simple starch-iodine test that highlights where the sweating is heaviest, so the injections are placed where they count.

3
The injections

A series of small injections is given just under the skin of each underarm. It's a quick outpatient appointment, taking around 20-30 minutes, and you go home the same day.

4
Aftercare advice

You leave with clear aftercare advice and know what to expect as the effect builds over the following one to two weeks, with repeat treatment arranged when it's needed.

07FAQ

Common questions.

Is this the same as cosmetic facial Toxin? +

No. This is the medical use of botulinum toxin to treat excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis). The injections go just under the skin of the underarms to reduce sweating — it isn't the cosmetic facial treatment used to soften wrinkles.

How much does it cost? +

Treatment of the armpits is £400, and treatment of the soles of the feet or the hands is £450 each. An initial skin consultation is £200 and a follow-up is £100. Major UK insurers are billed directly where you're covered.

How long does it last? +

The effect builds over one to two weeks and typically lasts several months, often around four to six. It isn't permanent — because it treats the sweating rather than the underlying tendency, repeat sessions are usually needed, and it can be repeated when the effect wears off.

Does it cure the sweating? +

No. It reduces underarm sweating for a period rather than curing it, and the effect wears off over time, so repeat treatment is usually needed. We can't promise a particular result, but it's a well-established option when strong antiperspirants haven't helped enough.

Do I need a GP referral? +

No — you can book an assessment with Dr Alsaadi directly, with or without a letter from your doctor, and there's no NHS waiting list.
